There is No Shrimp… And Other Lies My Mother Told Me by Kenny Loui

Welcome back to the “UFO Catcher” Series, and this season will be about shrimps and lies, hahahahaha. OK, in all seriousness now, this is the second volume of the UFO catcher series, and if you haven’t read the first novel of the series, or review, please click here to solve this grave issue, because this is a super fun, cute and nerdy graphic novel with EXCELLENT artwork from Yamawe, and stories by Kenny Loui!

In the first season/novel we saw the beginning of this great adventure/mission to free all plushy UFOs from captivity, haahhahahaha, yes, you will be as surprised as I was once you read it as well, and have as much fun.

IF you haven’t read any graphic novel, and if this is not your thing, then I invite you to rethink that position, because this series is worth anyone’s time. So, to the review!

Cover impressions: (laughs), we have a shrimp, an evil shrimp and a young Kenny running for his life, and we ask: do shrimps have teeth? Hahahhaha. Ok, maybe I’m having too much fun with this cover, but anyone will admit that it’s funny, I mean, look at it, hahahahahha. Nice.

So, we have Kenny’s mother, and apparently lies that parents tell to kids as a hint, and we become curious on what those lies are, and how is this all going to relate with the last part of the series.

Remember that flaming porky UFO that Somi threw at Killian at the end of the last book? YEah, it is a MC now, and it’s having conversations with Kenny, while he is in jail. Yes, yes, you have read that right and yes, it is as crazy and funny as it sounds.

And we have DBZ references on this novel, ‘SWEET! OK, the nerdiness (and cuteness) of this volume is several folds that of the previous (the pink colour as well), because, and I want you to imagine this, we have kid Kenny, a highly active and creative kid, that sees cartoons, and has a mother that creates shiny versions of the truth, lets us say.

I want you to take a second and try to imagine the consequences of that when he asked his mother to teach him how to fly like Batman, yes, Batman, Hahahahahaha. This is awesome!

Ok, with all seriousness though, this lays a strong message to parents, and this message is related to the consequences of catering to the wants of the kids in order to keep them safe from emotional pain, and then, the second one is how these “little” lies, can create serious consequences if kept unchecked, because kids will believe in everything their parents will say.

I get it, (although I’m not a parent, yet), that it’s hard not to give in, but there must exist a higher resolve from parents, in order to keep kids grounded in reality, so they can grow to be prepared adults, because, lets face it, reality is hard and merciless towards what we think is the truth. Just a note.

Back to the puppets on drugs, yes, hahahahaha, this will make much more sense when you read the book and will make you realize that some lies, actually save lives, especially if you put mean puppets as the perpetrators of a cancelled tv show.

I just love some scenes on this book, and one of them is on page 36, because it has that “anime” moment when someone just realizes that shit has hit the fan and they have milliseconds to react, hhahahahhhahahh, the transition from one frame to the other was flawless and made the frame even better. She froze, hahahhahahahaha.

The answers that Kenny’s mother gives to little Kenny are hilarious, from our point of view, and the consequences are even funnier. Imagine making babies through touch, hahahhahahhhahah, and to topple that, you have a Matrix Shrimp, hahaahhhahahahaha. I am here laughing myself out while writing this, and you, the reader might think that I’m overacting, until you read it for yourself.

I assure you that there are a handful of books as random, creative, cute and hilarious as this one right here, and the artwork makes it stand out and helps create layers to the whole experience.

Now, a very positive part of this is that this book, graphic novel, focuses on the aspects of how we grow out of the many preconceptions that our parents create in us, and that we create on ourselves due to our habits or beliefs as children that, in the adult life shapes how we see the world and how we are. This is something that we actually forget every so often and when we are parents and we want the best to our kids. This graphic novel is a very nice reminder of this and a call for introspection towards oneself, with alien shrimps and drug-puppets, but still…

Yamawe, the artist was clearly having fun with the background shots and the anime sequences, hahahahhaha, this is so cool to look at, and we get a lot of things about Korea that we didn’t even dream! Wow, so nice to know other cultures.

Yeap! I didn’t expect the graphic novel’s second season to be like this, but I was pleasantly surprised by what I read, and the fact the it was a plot-twist (quite literally) in many ways from the first book. Another great read and a surprising continuation, if the books continue to be like this, then we will have a lot to expect from this series. Great job!!

Pros:

  • Excellent artwork, simply excellent
  • Surprsing stories from beggining to end
  • High rate humour in the story
  • New characters and original behaviours
  • Background images that are awesome
  • Easter eggs for anime fans, (I will not say, but… pay attention)

Cons:

  • None
